The Sea Can Stories Author Visits are engaging, curriculum-connected experiences for Kindergarten to Grade 4 classrooms throughout Southern Ontario. Each visit combines interactive storytelling, real-world learning, and hands-on creativity to help children discover the fascinating world of shipping containers and the global journeys they make every day.
Created and presented by J.R. Baron, a retired Ontario elementary teacher with more than thirty years of classroom experience, every Author Visit is designed with teachers in mind. Students are encouraged to wonder, ask questions, think creatively, and make meaningful connections across Language, Social Studies, STEM, Mathematics, and Visual Arts.
Whether students are hearing the stories for the first time or extending their classroom learning, every visit is designed to leave them excited to read, explore, and learn more.
Sea Can Discovery Visit
Approximately 40 minutes
A wonderful introduction to The Sea Can Stories.
Students enjoy an engaging read-aloud featuring one book from The Sea Can Stories series, followed by an interactive discussion that encourages curiosity, predictions, observations, and questions. Along the way, students discover how shipping containers connect communities across Canada and around the world while making meaningful curriculum connections through storytelling.
Each participating classroom receives one paperback copy of the featured book and one copy of The Sea Can Stories Activity Book 1 to continue the learning long after the visit has ended.

One class: $175
Additional classes on the same day: $125 per class
Sea Can Creator Workshop
Approximately 60 minutes
An unforgettable literacy and creativity experience.
The Sea Can Creator Workshop includes everything in the Sea Can Discovery Visit, followed by a hands-on art activity where every student designs and decorates their own miniature wooden shipping container pencil box to take home.
As students personalize their Sea Cans, they imagine names, personalities, destinations, and adventures while making connections to the stories they have just experienced. The activity encourages creativity, imagination, and thoughtful discussion while providing each child with a lasting keepsake.
Each participating classroom receives one paperback copy of the featured book and one copy of The Sea Can Stories Activity Book 1. Every student receives a wooden Sea Can pencil box to paint, decorate, and keep.
Price
One class up to 25 students: $395, plus $5 per student beyond 25 in the same class (to cover Sea Can pencil box materials).
Additional classes on the same day: $345 per class, plus $5 per student beyond 25 in the same class (to cover Sea Can pencil box materials).
Pricing includes all workshop materials, including one wooden Sea Can pencil box for every participating student.
Curriculum Connections
The Sea Can Stories Author Visits are engaging, inquiry-based learning experiences for Kindergarten to Grade 4 that connect naturally to The Ontario Curriculum. Through interactive storytelling, students develop oral communication skills as they listen, wonder, predict, ask thoughtful questions, and share their ideas. Each story becomes a springboard for literacy while encouraging vocabulary development, comprehension, critical thinking, and meaningful classroom discussion.
For Kindergarten to Grade 4 students, every visit begins with wonder. Children are naturally curious about the world around them, and The Sea Can Stories encourages them to ask questions, make observations, imagine possibilities, and investigate how things work. Through playful storytelling, conversation, and hands-on exploration, students build confidence as communicators while developing the habits of inquiry that support early literacy, STEM learning, creativity, collaboration, and problem solving. One simple question often leads to another, showing children that learning begins with curiosity.
As students journey with Kay, Floyd, Chase, and Vim, they discover how shipping containers connect people and communities across Canada and around the world. Along the way they explore geography, transportation, global trade, engineering, structures, mapping, and design while developing an appreciation for innovation, sustainability, and the remarkable systems that move everyday goods from one place to another.
The Sea Can Creator Workshop extends the learning through a memorable hands-on experience. Every child paints and decorates their own miniature wooden shipping container that becomes a unique pencil case to take home. As students design their Sea Can, they imagine its personality, where it might travel, what it might carry, and the adventures it could have along the way. The activity blends Visual Arts, creativity, storytelling, and STEM thinking while giving every child a meaningful keepsake that continues to inspire curiosity long after the visit has ended.
The learning doesn’t stop when the Author Visit is over. Every classroom receives The Sea Can Stories Activity Book 1, and teachers have access to the growing collection of free Educator Resources available on this website. Decodable readers, colouring pages, STEM activities, puzzles, inquiry prompts, and classroom extension lessons help students continue exploring the fascinating world of shipping containers while supporting literacy and cross-curricular learning back in the classroom.
